Do you know what to do after a hit-and-run accident?

With fewer vehicles on South Carolina’s roads these days, some reckless drivers may not hesitate to speed off after hitting another vehicle if no one is around to witness their misdeed. Would you know how to handle this situation if yours was the struck car?

To give you one less thing to worry about during these trying times, see what State Farm has to say regarding the matter. Understand how to protect your insurance rates just as diligently as you protect your health.

Contact the authorities

You and your passengers may have injuries after an accident. Even if there are no apparent injuries, it is essential to call 911 so that first responders can come to the scene to help you.

When the police arrive, they will talk to you about what happened and create a police report regarding the incident. The report will be helpful both for tracking down the person who hit you and for filing a claim with your insurance.

Stay where you are

The temptation to follow the at-fault driver may flare into an undeniable urge, but you have to smother the compulsion. If you follow the offending driver, you could complicate your situation. Also, there could be witnesses inside nearby homes where the incident took place. Your focus should be on gathering statements rather than chasing down cars.

Note all information that you remember

If you caught a glimpse of the other driver and vehicle, make a note of as many details as possible. Everything from the license plate number and make and model of the vehicle to images of the damage to your vehicle and where the other driver sped off help to build your case.

No matter if you were in your car during the hit-and-run, knowing what to do in the aftermath is essential to your recovery. Know that legal professionals may also help you bounce back from the unfortunate ordeal.
