A GPS company named Teletrac Navman has released a report analyzing nationwide data on traffic deaths from 2011 through 2015 to identify the deadliest highways in America.
Highway 17 runs through Myrtle Beach, SC, but it is also a 1200-mile highway that connects the East Coast from Florida to Virginia. During the years studied by Teletrac, there were 521 deaths along Highway 17. 21 of them were in Myrtle Beach which puts us at the top of the list for deaths along Highway 17.
What causes so many traffic deaths in Myrtle Beach? Obviously, car crashes. The other two reasons cited are overturned cars and pedestrian accidents.
Horry County is among South Carolina’s counties that have the highest rate of traffic fatalities.
So far in 2017, there have been 56 traffic deaths in Horry County alone. Two counties have a higher body count – Greenville with 57 and Charleston with 61.
Myrtle Beach, which accounts for a large portion of Horry County’s highway fatalities, is flooded with visitors – as many as 8 million a year. Traffic congestion, poorly planned roads and crosswalks in some areas, drunk drivers, and visitors who are unfamiliar with local roads all contribute to the high number of deaths.
For the same reasons, South Carolina also has one of the highest rates in the country of pedestrian deaths from auto accidents.
